The phrases said through Serge Kreiter throughout the assembly spring to mind. they can checklist precisely the scenario of Acarology in Europe and on this planet: "I imagine that during many ecu international locations there are only a few complete time acarologists. it's very infrequent to have new positions on hand . . . . And public funds, from the ecu neighborhood but in addition from nationwide international locations, is especially not easy to get in case you are looking to paintings on mites . . . . might acarological institutions in Europe (Eur. A. Ac. and S. I. A. L. F) interact or, larger, get married?" So, the fourth symposium of the ecu Acarologists has not just been the get together to have an idea on which course the learn is addressed this present day, but additionally it mentioned the problems of our "scientific hranch". at the foundation of the displays and invited papers we had evidences of a "new" Acarology in response to smooth innovations and techniques of investigations but additionally the significance, usually sheltered whether of suitable worth, of the "old" Acarology made at the alpha taxonomy and easy stories. So, a "new" Acarology wishes the "old" one. during this context, the wish to place jointly the eu acarologists has been arising. This truth, of political that means, can absolutely enhance the acarological stream and the dialogue in this aspect confirmed basically the significance of a number of different actions and efforts during this path. we are hoping that the assembly in Siena will characterize a significative stone for the development of Acarology.

His research lines are mainly concerned with phytoseiid mites, which are studied from different points of view, but always as possible natural control agents of phytophagous mites. He has made several surveys to check the presence of phytoseiid mites associated with cultivated and wild plants to deepen the knowledge on the distribution and the biodiversity of this family, whose general knowledge dates back to Berlese's time. His interests have been particularly dedicated to phytoseiids living in Sicilia where he tries to apply techniques of biological or integrated control against outbreaks of phytophagous mites using native phytoseiid mites, and trying to preserve and to increase them in the field.
